  • You interpretation of the photograph (point out the visual details in the photograph that supports your analysis.)
  • Conclusion. Does this photograph compliment the rest of your chosen photographer’s work? If so, how? If no, why?

Brian By Philip-Lorca DiCorcia
This is a photo by Phillip-Lorca DiCorcia and the name of the kid in the photo is Brian. It is a photo of a boy who is in what appears to be his kitchen. There is natural light coming through the kitchen window lighting his face. The kitchen lights are also on which creates that eerie shadow below the counter's edge. There are several foods out on the counter including corn on the cob, some ham, carrots, and fruit in the back. Something also noticeable is the amount of three's are in this kitchen. The lights on the ceiling, the glass jars on the fridge, the amount of black tiles on the far wall, and the amount of brown tiles on the right wall. The refrigerator is also open and this suggests that the child "Brian" is looking for something to eat. He stares somewhere the viewer can't see because its behind the counter. First thoughts are to wonder what he is looking at.
I think this is an interesting photo. It is something people do everyday. Look for food. It may mean that this child is doing his everyday humane necessity and decides to look for food. This than makes me think a boy at this age needs to feed himself, but where are his parents. He seems to be eating or looking to eat by himself and his parents aren't preparing food for him. He also has plenty of good choices on the counter of things to eat, but is it that they are too healthy that prevents him from wanting to eat these? Maybe his true story is he is sneaking into his kitchen undetected by his parents so he can spoil his dinner by finding a snack that may not be too healthy. His face is looking at something in the counter and he doesn't seem to happy so its possible that he doesn't find anything he really wants because the refrigerator is open and left open so he failed finding something there and now he has failed in the pantry cabinets below the counter.
This picture fits Philip-Lorca DiCorcia's style completely. He has everything so perfectly set up, but still makes it seem like a normal thing. He says, "photography is a foreign language everyone thinks he speaks." I looked at this photo for literally one minute and could come up with a vast story and that is essentially what makes DiCorcia's photos so enticing. Everyday someone may experience this same thing, but why not make a beautiful photo of it. He has done a lot of amazing street photography, so seeing a photo of a house that looks like a financially stable family lives in is different. From the streets to the kitchen. I instantly loved this photo because of how it was different and I wanted to know what his reason was.

Our next project was to take a picture we've already taken and outline it, show shading, and include the highlighted areas of the photo. Our Choice of which picture to take was determined by our favorite lighting and our least favorite. So to start off I will of course end on a high note. So with out further adieu, my least favorite lighting.

This next assignment, a team of three had to take a song/time period/genre of music and come up with studio shots that resemble or portray that music. My group decided to choose 90's Pop. This includes bands like 'Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Brittney Spears, Christina Aguilera. We instantly thought of crisp white background, interesting bright colors and solid shades of black and white. We also though happiness and posing would fit the era. So without further adieu....
